South Africa is facing a disturbing surge in the abuse of digital technology within domestic violence (DV) cases, with police reporting a worrying trend of perpetrators gifting children recording devices and using hacked smart home technology to monitor their victims. The situation is escalating, with instances of offenders contacting victims relentlessly even while incarcerated.

Teddy Bear Trackers and Hidden Cameras: A New Form of Control

One particularly unsettling tactic involves gifting children seemingly innocent toys like teddy bears equipped with hidden recording devices. These 'teddy trackers' allow perpetrators to secretly monitor their victims’ movements, conversations, and daily lives. Coupled with this are reports of hacked doorbell cameras and other smart home devices being used to spy on victims within their own homes. This represents a significant escalation in the level of control and surveillance perpetrators are exerting.

“We’re seeing a concerning pattern of perpetrators exploiting technology to maintain control and intimidate their victims,” stated a police spokesperson. “These small, easily concealed devices are proving incredibly difficult to detect, and the psychological impact on victims is devastating.”

Jailhouse Harassment: Relentless Contact from Behind Bars

In one shocking case, an offender contacted a woman a staggering 668 times over a four-month period, demonstrating the lengths to which individuals will go to maintain control and inflict emotional distress.
