Urgent Reminder for South West Families: Protect Your Children with Catch-Up Vaccinations

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) South West is issuing a crucial reminder to parents and carers across the region to schedule and prioritise vaccine catch-up appointments during the summer holidays. With a concerning rise in measles cases, ensuring your children are fully vaccinated is more important than ever.

Measles Cases on the Rise: A Regional Concern

New figures reveal a significant increase in measles cases across England. Since the start of the year, a total of 674 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported. Worryingly, the South West region accounts for 8.6% of these cases, representing 58 confirmed instances. This highlights a localised resurgence of the disease and underscores the need for swift action to protect vulnerable children.

Why Catch-Up Vaccinations Are Vital

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and even death. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect against this potentially devastating disease. Catch-up vaccinations are particularly important for children who may have missed doses due to various reasons, such as school closures or disruptions to healthcare services.

Who Should Book an Appointment?

The UKHSA South West urges all parents and carers to check their children’s vaccination records to ensure they are up-to-date with the MMR vaccine. Specifically, they are encouraging those with children who haven't received two doses of the MMR vaccine to book an appointment as soon as possible. Even older children who haven't been vaccinated previously should be offered the vaccine.

Easy Access to Vaccination Services

Booking a vaccine appointment is straightforward. Parents and carers can contact their GP practice or visit the NHS website to find vaccination clinics in their area. The NHS is committed to making vaccination accessible and convenient for all families.

Protecting Our Community: A Collective Responsibility

“We strongly encourage all parents and carers in the South West to take advantage of the summer break to ensure their children are protected against measles and other preventable diseases,” said a spokesperson for UKHSA South West. “Vaccination is a simple yet powerful way to safeguard our community and prevent outbreaks of serious illnesses. Let's work together to protect our children and keep the South West healthy.”
